Incorporating the Breasts and Chest (16 CE Hours)

Being able to directly touch and treat the breasts and chest can improve client heath in so many ways, from shoulder pain, to mastectomy recovery, to panic attacks. But first, you need a place to start, especially if you are one of the many who did not learn this work in your initial training and/or are practicing this work in a state which requires additional education. In “Incorporating the Breasts and Chest: 16 CEs for LMTs,” you will:
  • Learn a simple and effective routine for incorporating the male and female chest wall and breast tissue into a full body massage.
  • Get ideas for incorporating what you learn with the style of massage you already do.
  • Meet the 16 hour WA State CE requirement for offering breast and chest massage work (WAC 246-830-555).
  • Satisfy 3 of the 4-hour WA State CE requirement for ethics.
  • Work with LMTs of all genders (depending on student sign-up).
  • Be in a small, supportive class: 3-12 students only.

Class Description

In this class, students will learn massage of the ribcage, chest, and breasts, intended to support healthy, full breathing and overall well-being. This massage commonly benefits clients experiencing stress, musculoskeletal neck, chest and shoulder related weakness or injuries, and also clients with non-cancerous breast related conditions such as menstrual related tenderness, fibrocystic breast tissue and other non-cancerous conditions. This massage also commonly benefits clients preparing for and/or recovering from surgeries, including those for breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast removal/mastectomy and/or open-heart surgery.

The chest and breast massage taught in this class is intended to be easily integrated into a holistic, full body session to relieve tension, stress and pain, and to increase our clients’ ease of movement in both the upper and lower body.  This work consistently helps clients feel and connect with their whole body in a wonderful way that many have not previously experienced.  I envision normalizing full chest and breast massage within both treatment and relaxation focused massages. I am working for the day when massage of the full chest and breast area will be commonly offered as an option within full-body wellness massage sessions.

Emphasis is placed on making our touch safe, pleasant, neutral/non-sexual, and effective for all clients.  In many of the techniques, pressure is directed to the muscles and ribs located deep to the mammary glands.  Students will learn massage techniques which are done for all genders with the chest draped and other techniques which are done bare chested/breasted.

This class is not specific only to the breast as relates to breast feeding, breast health, etc., but is instead a way to incorporate this area of the body, and treat the chest wall, in any session for a person of any gender.

This course meets Washington State training requirements for specialized training in breast massage (WAC 246-830-555), and meets NCBTMB CE requirements as well (#1000798). More than half the class time is devoted to hands-on massage practice.  The balance of the time is spent discussing the issues specific to breast massage listed below.

Course training includes information on and discussion of the following:
  • indications and contraindications
  • therapeutic treatment techniques
  • draping requirements
  • appropriate therapist-client or patient boundaries
  • expected outcomes
  • client/patient safety related to breast massage
  • breast anatomy and physiology
  • pathology

Classes Outside of WA State
Generally, I am contracted by massage schools when I am teaching breast massage out-of-state. However, I am open to teaching on a contracted basis out-of-state, particularly if a student or clinic is willing to host me. Class costs are negotiable.
Classes on the East Coast/in the Boston Area
If the West Coast is too far for your travels, my friend and colleague, Edward Louis Miano, owner of Healing Hands Bodywork, teaches a similar 16-hour course in the Boston, MA area. Instructor Profile
Lynna Dunn Fuller, LMT, MA60023935, NCBTMB Member #2000620/Instructor #1000798

My name is Lynna Dunn Fuller, and I am a licensed massage therapist and owner of Jubilee Massage Therapy. You can view my full profile here.

Having been a student of Barbara Helynn Heard Robles since my massage school days, and having been trained and mentored by her to do and teach breast and chest work in WA state, I knew that I wanted to help train others to do this work when she announced her retirement from teaching, early in 2021. A long and much-respected massage therapist and instructor, Barbara was a key voice in the 2015-2016 discussions to define what became “WAC 246-830-555 Breast Massage,” in order to keep the breast/chest area within scope of practice for WA State LMTs. In November of 2021, I assisted Barbara in teaching her final breast and chest massage class in Seattle.

“Incorporating the Breasts and Chest: 16 CEs for LMTs” is based strongly on the work and routines developed by Barbara, which I learned under her and am using with her permission. Barbara’s work is strongly based on her lomi lomi background, and I will be teaching these routines as she would, with additions and suggestions of my own. As Barbara often stated, this work “should more accurately be referred to as “full chest massage”; while it includes the breast tissue, the primary target is the chest wall deep to the breast tissue.” Including full chest and breast massage within full body massage sessions supports healthy breathing, stress relief, shoulder and neck treatment, and general well being. While some clients will have specific breast tissue issues and experiences (pregnancy, cancer, reductions, augmentations, etc.) and can get great help and relief from massage in this area, all clients can receive great benefit from this work.

  • ALL FEMALE CLASSES: Attendee is expected to both give and receive all techniques with female students and to give techniques to male models provided in the class.

FAQs
What should I bring?
Please bring 2 sets of sheets, one set for each day, a 100% cotton hand towel, and a pillowcase or face cradle cover (one for each day). Good quality massage cream, etc., will be provided.
Where will the class meet?
In my home studio. The address is 2304 H Street Bellingham, and there is ample free street parking.
What about food for breaks and lunch?
My home studio is located near downtown Bellingham. Many restaurants are nearby, or you may bring food and keep it in the fridge/kitchen and eat it here. The Meridian Street Haggen is only a few blocks away, and has both a wonderful deli and a Starbucks. Food can also easily be delivered.
Where can I stay if I am traveling from out of town?
There are several wonderful hotels in Bellingham. I like the Four Points by Sheraton, just off the I-5 on Lakeway Drive; it has a nice restaurant and is very close to the classroom location, and to both downtown Bellingham and Fairhaven.

I may be able to host one to three people in my home. A queen bed private room for $120 for both nights; $50 for both nights for my wonderful soft sofa; and $80 for both nights for our twin office room. A bathroom will be available for each, and you may launder your sheets here if you wish

Will there be male students in the class?
Possibly. Male LMTs are welcome to sign up, as they require the same classwork to be able to legally perform massage on the undraped breast and chest area of both male and female clients. This does not mean I can predict how many or if any male LMTs will sign up for the class. However, we hope they will, as part of the goal of this work is to normalize work in this area of the body as neutral and healing to clients of both genders.
Do I need to have had a COVID vaccination?
No. I am no longer requiring proof of COVID vaccine or vaccine exemption to take this class.
Will we need to wear masks?
No, unless things change in the next several months. I will provide an extra box of paper masks if needed.
Will any other special precautions be taken?
Not that I know of at this time, other than normal sanitary procedures.
Note: Normally, I don’t think it necessary to share a lot of personal information, but the recent pandemic sometimes requires more transparency in order to make visitors feel safe. This class is obviously in my home/home studio, and I want to stress that only two people live in my home: myself and my 10-year-old daughter. We are both vaccinated against COVID. Furthermore, except for the first 3 weeks of COVID in March/April 2020, I have continued to practice, without, I feel blessed to say, ever having had COVID or having to shut down or quarantine due to COVID exposure from a client or other.
How much does it cost?
The cost of this two-day class is $340 if purchased during the "early bird" period, and $365 thereafter. Payment is due in full upon registration. Refund requests will be 100% up until 2 weeks before class start. Refund requests after that date will be minus a $50 administration fee.
